About Us 

FINEGEMS.COM is founded and administrated by Wayne D. Prentice, G.G. providing over 30 years expert gemological experience. Wayne's background includes being a former Gemology Instructor at the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) (Resident Colored Stones and Gem Identification Instructor), an award winning gem cutter (AGTA Cutting Edge Award Winner), retail and wholesale of finest colored gemstones and diamonds in the jewelry industry. In addition to holding a degree in Business Economics from the University of California, Santa Barbara, Wayne is also a licensed Real Estate Broker in California (Lic #01232453).

Gemological Institute of America (G.I.A.)

Graduate Gemologist degree earned in residence (July 86). The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) the most recognized school of gemology in the world was established in the 1930's to solely educate and facilitate the jewelry industry. Today GIA has grown into an extremely large non-profit organization that includes: resident and home study education in gemology and jewelry manufacturing arts (GIA-Education); a gem trade lab that sets worldwide standards for diamond grading along with gem identification (GIA-GTL); gemological instruments (GIA Instruments); research that is equipped with the latest sophisticated instruments to keep on top of all new developments in the jewelry industry (GIA-Research); and, the largest gemological library and information center in the world (GIA-Library). Students of all ages and from all parts of the world, come to learn gemology from GIA.


G.I.A. Resident Instructor Colored Stones and Gem Identification (August 86 through September 88)

After finishing top in the respective Graduate Gemologist classes while attending GIA's Santa Monica, California campus, upon graduation, I was approached to become a resident instructor. I accepted the unique opportunity to further my knowledge and industry network. The portion I taught covered over 2/3 of the Resident Graduate Gemology program with a typical class size averaging around 24 students of all ages from all parts of the world. The Resident course ran for 26 weeks, 7 hours a day. While at GIA, I took full advantage of GIA's generosity to further their staff's knowledge by learning many aspects of jewelry manufacturing arts and by participating in their Speakers Bureau.
